What you’ll learnBy the end of this course, you’ll be able to
  • Understand who this course is for and what it will and won't do
  • Analyze any creative work through the Creative Value Lens and understand how the dimensions interact with each other
  • Break your work's costs into three production constraints: Time, Effort, and Resources
  • Describe the four AI Fluency competencies
  • Describe your practice across what you make, how you make it, and how you work
  • Apply Delegation — Problem Awareness, Platform Awareness, and Task Delegation — to a real project
  • Distinguish five common Delegation decision outcomes
  • Trace the full analytical flow from articulated practice to documented decisions

At Anthropic, we believe that empowering people with AI, and ensuring that AI makes safe contributions to society, requires engaging with a wide range of human perspectives and experiences. Creative professionals are uniquely positioned to shape how AI enters creative work, but only if they approach it intentionally, with clear judgment about what their work is for and what makes it theirs. In that spirit, this course was written and developed by Anthropic in partnership with Professor Rick Dakan from Ringling College of Art and Design and Professor Joseph Feller from University College Cork, the creators of the AI Fluency Framework.

This course helps creators, writers, illustrators, designers, musicians, and other makers build practical AI collaboration skills through the 4D Framework (Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence). It begins from a deliberate starting point of no AI, then gives you two analytical tools, the Creative Value Lens and the Production Lens, to decide whether, where, and how AI belongs in your practice.

The work builds on our AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations course, adapted specifically for the creative context, where authorship, distinctiveness, and the relationship with an audience create unique considerations for AI collaboration.

This course lightly covers the foundational AI Fluency concepts. However, for deeper understanding, participants should complete AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations before beginning this creative-focused curriculum.

It is also recommended that learners have access to an AI tool for hands-on practice. Examples in this course will use Claude.ai, but any AI assistant will work.

Inside the course

Introduction

1 lesson

This video frames the moment creators are in and sets the central stance of the course: begin with no AI use, and from there use the analytical tools introduced in the course to make informed, intentional decisions about AI use in your creative practice.

The Creative Lenses

2 lessons

This video introduces the first analytical tool, the Creative Value Lens, which names three kinds of value creative work produces: Creative Expression, Human Connection, and Distinctiveness. It examines each dimension, how they interact, and how authenticity relates to the value of creative work. This video introduces the Production Lens, which describes Production Constraints, the baseline costs of making creative work, and Technological Complexity, how technology acts on those constraints. It closes on a structural observation: as production constraints fall, the Value Lens dimensions matter more, not less. When baseline output is cheap, the differentiator is what the work is for and what makes it specific.

The AI Fluency Framework

1 lesson

This video introduces the AI Fluency Framework: the ability to interact with AI systems in ways that are effective, efficient, ethical, and safe. The framework breaks fluency into four interconnected competencies: Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence. It examines each competency and demonstrates how they form the Two Nested Loops.

The Inner Loop

1 lesson

This video examines your own creative practice using the inner loop of Description and Discernment: articulating what you do, how you do it, and how you work, and using that articulation to create explicit standards to evaluate work against.

The Outer Loop

1 lesson

This video points your analytical toolkit at an actual decision, using the Delegation-Diligence loop to break down when and how to apply AI to your creative work. AI use in creative practice also brings common pitfalls; this video names them while building the muscle to know when to step back and not delegate.

Putting it all together

2 lessons

This video names the five shapes a Delegation decision tends to take. They split along one clear line: whether AI-generated material appears in the final work the audience encounters. No AI, Consultant, and Tool Builder sit on one side of the line. Co-Creator and Medium sit on the other. This video assembles the full analytical flow using one illustrator's work and workflows to demonstrate how to move from articulating your practice, to analyzing your work using the lenses, to applying Delegation and Diligence to land at different outcomes for different pieces of work.
